 | 10:41 pm I just watched The World According to Garp and it falls into the top three book to movie failures. It was like The Shinning, there were characters with the same names and a few similar thing occurred. Boo. Boooooooo!
Did anyone see the anon comment I got yesterday? The IP tracks to Japan, I'm still not really sure wtf but I think it's really ...interesting:
I'm asking you again. Are you sure you will be in Tokyo to make formal apologies on Dec. 31th, 2009?

 | 11:12 am - Movies I’ve seen more movies in the theater in the last two weeks than I have all year I think. Avatar was an adventure in 3D with a lacking plot, LOTR was the same as it always is but I for the first time caught the bit about the stone trolls in Fellowship (it’s fun to catch things you’d missed before), Where the Wild Things Are left me feeling confused about if a story was told or if it was just creatures hopping around for an hour. Additional movies include Deep Star Six which was NOT as good as it was when I was eight, Happiness which I’d seen before but only remembered Philip Seymour Hoffman and his masturbatory phone book calls and was disturbed by the whole movie over again (I like disturbing, uncomfortable movies) and The Strangers which left my heart pounding for two hours. I’m glad we watched that during the day, and in the winter. I was going up and down in to the basement and outside a few times last night and the guy in the bag mask would sneak in to my head but my first reaction was “it’s winter in MN, no one would bother with that shit.”

 | 06:32 am - Kind of glad I've got netflix right now. In vacation tradition, I stayed up all night watching movies and doing crosstitch. Of course, I haven't done this in probably 10 years, but no time like the present to pick up the old habit of screwing with my sleep schedule, is there?
I caught up on the Doctor Who specials then popped in Inglourious Basterds. If I'd realized 80% of the movie was in a foreign language, I would've picked something different. It's difficult to have my focus on the crosstitch and subtitles at the same time. Subtitles in The Godfather II were what killed my marathon of those movies, years ago. Current Mood: awake

 | 10:29 am I have so much to do. I don't want to do any of it. Grrr. I've been working on Microsoft for the last few weeks and I enjoy the person I'm working with, but he's very in to doing things his way. He's out this week and I'm scared that not doing things his way will result in wasted work that will need to be redone upon his return. So I'm procrastinating.
I finished The World According to Garp. It was the first 600 pager I've read in a long time. I loved it, and was so happy it was so long - it just kept on going. The movie is available as "instant" on Netflix until January 1 so I have to get on that. Maybe I'll watch it tonight if Ryan leaves for Teh Footballs.
I bit the bullet and posted the Belgian pictures on Facebook instead of LJ. Having to individually upload onto LJ is just too much. So, they're here if you want to see lots of pictures of beer. And breweries. And some pictures of food too. Oh, the food on that trip. Wowza.
Yesterday I got this message from a girl Ryan went to high school with:
"Thank you so much for these amazing pictures. It was also nice to see current photos of Ryan. Even though we don't know each other, I just felt the need to thank you."
That's kind of weird, yeah? I sent her a note that told her she's very welcome.
Ryan and Elise got me a BodyBugg for Christmas. I haven't downloaded the software yet but wish I would have before yesterday. I watched The Strangers with Jeff and Sarah and had an elevated heart rate the whole movie and would have liked to have seen if that registered at all.
We've been talking about getting a second cat, but even after the Christmas rush the one I've been looking at is still there. There are only 6 kittens left (there were about 20) and she's still there. Something must be wrong with her, unfriendly or something which after years with Ffrrnntt I'm partly fine with, but Ryan wants a cat that will walk up and hug him and sit on his lap. And I don't blame him. But then I look at Ffrrnnt and know that she's going to be really mad for a long time and don't know if it's a good idea at all to get another cat. Ho hum.
Alright, going to work a little bit.

 | 08:24 pm - Tie one on I need a pile of old ugly neckties. If anyone can get me a tie or two this week, please do. You won't get them back, but I can promise they will be used for comedic purposes.

 | 08:18 pm - 2009 Movies! #104: The Mighty Ducks #105: Small-Town Gay Bar Both of these were things I just checked out on Netflix Instant Streaming, Ducks for the Twin Cities on film (funny things included someone concerned that a car would fall through the ice...in Elliot Park). One thing I was wondering was where the first scene with the kids was filmed -- the theater marquee doesn't exist anymore, as far as I know. You can see the American Express building in the background down the street, so it must be close to downtown Minneapolis. Hm.
Small-Town Gay Bar is a documentary about, well, gay bars in small southern towns. It's really well-done, and like I said, available on Netflix Instant Streaming. Check it out.

 | 02:25 pm - 2009 Movies! #101: The Blues Brothers #102: Love Actually The rest of the Traditional Jewish Christmas sent us to Little Szechuan in Saint Paul, just a short jump from the Capitol. Very good food at reasonable prices and great service, so of course they will go under soon enough when the Central Corridor Light Rail construction begins. After that, home where we watched two more movies, both in the high end of my all-time favorites.
#103: Darkon I wonder if Civil War reenactors look down on these folks, or vice versa.

 | 06:08 pm - 2009 Movies! #100: Sherlock Holmes It's actually really good. Not the action movie hinted at in the trailers, more like "House and Wilson in an 1890 buddy cop movie", which is a good thing. I've never liked the very upperclass Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone - too much forgetting that the London of the times was a very dirty place. The cinematography illustrates the difference between the haves and have-nots quite well, with the majority living in a dirty, blue-grey land, and the politicians bathed in a warm orange glow.
Highly recommended.

 | 11:04 pm - 2009 Movies! #99: American Pie We were watching The Big Bang Theory last night when a commercial for a horrible-looking direct-to-video American Pie sequel when sithlet said "You know, I've never seen an American Pie movie." I own the first one, so we watched it, and it was fun. The Enb.

 | 02:33 am - ok, two serial killers go for a ride oh, winter dexter marathons.
Slightly more than halfway through and, due to snow day tomorrow, not particularly planning to stop.
Oh, foreshadowing. "Put 2 people together in a room long enough, they're going to fuck." Love Desmond Harrington, he is just way too hot.
Characters who try to help but just get in the way of the heroes annoy me. In Alias I couldn't stand Will, and Deb's going for the Trinity Killer seems like a waste of screentime. I miss Lundy, and loved him and Deb in the second season when they announced their relationship in the middle of the cops' office.
plateoshrimp said John Lithgow should win a million emmys for his role. I was a little bored until ep 5 when we started to flesh out his character. I wondered why his killing cycle ended so early in the season but now we get full glory.
I hate when I marathon through and shows end. Current Mood: chipper

 | 08:26 am - 2009 Movies! BNAT Joins the Jams!
#86: Faust #87: The Lovely Bones #88: Girl Crazy #89: The Red Shoes #90: Shutter Island (World Premiere) #91: Le Magnifique #92: Micmacs #93: Frozen (World Premiere) #94: Centipede Horror #95: Candy Snatchers #96: Kick-Ass (Work print, so pre-world premiere) #97: Avatar
This was really the best-programmed BNAT ever. The only clunkers were the ones that were meant to be (the early-morning slots are generally the films designed to torture the audience. This year that honor went to Centipede Horror and Candy Snatchers), and the rest of the movies were all at least interesting.
I am getting really sick of the people that either sleep through multiple films, complain about the movies, or both. There are 7-12,000 people that apply to get in to BNAT every year, and I would much rather any of them had your space.
#98 Watchmen (Director's Cut) Watched this while sorting our work Christmas cards the other night. I liked the death of Hollis, which was left out of the theatrical cut, but the setup for it was really clunky, as opposed to the perfect way if was set up in the book.
